"Stubbornness" is close. "Spite" is too mean. "Defiance" is too grand. Inat is what makes somebody rebuild a house brick by brick rather than let it be torn down — not because it is practical, but because it is theirs.
Every project on the front page started as a sentence somebody said in passing.
